'Art of Resistance' is a two year, Heritage funded project run by the Trinity Centre. The project explores 100 years of social activism, protest and civil disobedience within Bristol and looks at the different forms of creative expression that has accompanied it.
I have been commissioned by Trinity to provide a series of workshops that will go to inform the creation of a mural responding to the title, 'Visions of Resistance.'
The initial workshop took place at the Trinity Garden Party and I was accompanied by Josh Hoyte and Caitlin Quinn. The idea was to allow the public to freely explore social/political issues that they cared about in a creative way. Josh had a collage station which included a range of text and photographic images, and Caitlin focused on Solutions Based Journalism; looking at the way in which the media can frame certain stories and how we can flip the narrative and find solutions instead. I focused on poster/placard making.
It was great to see people of all ages getting involved and having an open dialogue around the issues they care about.
With the next three workshops, I facilitated the making of protest placards using stencils. The aim was to get an understanding of the issues that the people of Bristol are most concerned with whilst also exploring the rich history of placard making and protest. All the placards will be displayed in an exhibition in September and the designs will go towards the design of the mural.
